Life is magnificent, wondrous, enchanting, fragile, and short. We have an incredibly small amount of time to love, influence, and change. This realization brings into perspective the value of each breath and waking moment. The decisions we make will be based upon priorities and values that define us. The following are lyrics to a well known song sung by Johnny Cash, entitled Hurt. The lyrics of this song focus on the concept of priorities, and how those priorities impact the future. One phrase is echoed throughout and rings true in my ears; "You could have it all, my empire of dirt." Johnny Cash was successful beyond imagination, yet he refers to it all as an empire of dirt! This has challenged me to consider what I am chasing after and what I desire most in this life. Is it the world and all the stuff it has to offer, or is it the kingdom of God which is everlasting? As you read the lyrics to Hurt, dig deep and attempt to be honest with yourself about what motivates you in this life. I have, and it is incredible to be in a place where I feel at peace with where I am at, where I am going, and what I value most. Life is short..what are you doing today to make it worth while?
Hurt - Johnny Cash
I hurt myself today
to see if I still feel
I focus on the pain
the only thing that's real
the needle tears a hole
the old familiar sting
try to kill it all away
but I remember everything
what have I become?
my sweetest friend
everyone I know
goes away in the end
and you could have it all
my empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt
I wear this crown of thorns
upon my liar's chair
full of broken thoughts
I cannot repair
beneath the stains of time
the feelings disappear
you are someone else
I am still right here
what have I become?
my sweetest friend
everyone I know
goes away in the end
and you could have it all
my empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt
if I could start again
a million miles away
I would keep myself
I would find a way
